How do I apply?

Before applying students need to find a study programme and institution and check the admission requirements. Students should directly address the chosen university. Each university sets their own admission requirements. Please visit university’s website to find out about application and exams in details.

What are the application deadlines?

  • For the autumn semester application deadline usually for EU students is beginning of July, non-EU   students – beginning of June;
  • For the spring semester application deadline for EU students is beginning of December, for non-EU   students – beginning of November
  • If the application deadline is before I get my diploma from secondary school/university, what should I do?

    If you are still studying in the last semester and have not received a diploma yet, you can apply with provisional results from your school. You have to submit provisional certificate officially signed and stamped by the school/university. It is only applicable if university in Latvia agrees to accept you with provisional certificate/document.

    Do I need TOEFL or IELTS?

    University may request TOEFL or IELTS. If you do not have TOELF /IELTS or any other language proficiency document, in some cases university may set English language online exam.

    What are the requirements for admission to universities?

    Is there an application fee?

    Yes, there is non-refundable application fee. Students have to pay non-refundable registration fee, which is around 150 EUR or 200 USD.

    How do I obtain a visa and/or residence permit?

    Visa/Residence permit requirements may vary depending on the student’s home country. Students are strongly advised to communicate with the university regarding visa process. Basic information can be found here.

    Am I allowed to work as a student?

    Bachelor students during their studies are allowed to work part time – 20 hours per week. Master and Doctoral students are allowed to work full time.

    Can I transfer my previous credits?

    It is possible for students to transfer their credits and continue their studies at the chosen university, but application details and requirements must be addressed to the university.

    Do I have to study Latvian language?

    Latvian language studies are offered at all universities. Incoming degree and exchange students are encouraged to learn Latvian.

    Do universities offer dormitories/ accommodation?

    Some universities have their own student dormitories; others provide assistance with housing search. You should ask the international student advisor at your chosen university for advice and/or assistance.
